Trucks regularly travel across Georgia, which can put residents at risk of catastrophic accidents if something goes wrong. It’s important to take certain steps after being injured in a truck accident.
Remain at the scene but get to safety
If you’re able to get to safety, do so immediately. It’s the law to remain at the scene after trucking accidents. Call 911 if you’re able to do so. The police and emergency responders should come to provide assistance.
Once an ambulance arrives, make sure the EMTs check you out for potential injuries even if you feel fine.
Take photos and get information
Take photos of the accident scene. Avoid making conversation with the truck driver but get their full name, contact information, the name of the trucking company, license plate and driver’s license information. You should also find witnesses to the accident and get their names, contact information and recollections of the accident.
Get immediate medical attention
You should get immediate medical attention in addition to the quick check by the EMTs. Some injuries lay dormant after an accident. Since accidents involving big rigs can be particularly serious, you want to ensure that you don’t have any internal injuries. Getting medical attention also means you can get any treatment you might need.
Call your auto insurance carrier
Trucking accidents are almost always the fault of the truck driver or another party related to the truck itself. You will want to call your auto insurance carrier and notify an agent that you were involved in an accident.
Get a copy of the accident report
You should obtain a copy of the accident report as soon as possible. You should be able to get one from your local police precinct or at the precinct in the area where the accident occurred.
