June 19, 2017 | Comments (0)

In Arizona, twice as many people engage in distracted driving, versus other parts of the country. Car accidents continue to be the top cause of death for young adults and teens, with many of those being caused by distracted driving. So what is distracted driving and why is it such a threat for people on the state’s roads today?

If you or someone you love has suffered an auto accident with personal injury, you need the help of a top Arizona accident lawyer. Never accept an insurance company settlement without first talking to a personal injury attorney, one specializing in Arizona traffic accidents.

About Arizona Distracted Driving

Distracted drivers are those not focusing on the road, as they should. Instead, they focus on things inside the passenger compartment or even what is happening outside around their vehicle. Distracted driving includes a wide variety of behaviors, including:

  • Texting
  • Talking on the phone
  • Reading a map
  • Eating or drinking
  • Changing the radio station
  • Putting on makeup or fixing hair
  • Other activities

When you get behind the wheel of your car, you must take responsibility for your safety and that of people around you. This means not doing things on your smartphone or inside the car that takes your eyes, hands or attention away from the road.

According to recent news reports and statistics from the Arizona Department of Transportation, more Arizonans engage in deadly distracted driving than other states. In fact, twice the national average for distracted driving takes place here in Arizona, as of 2016. Arizona’s traffic fatalities also rank at twice the national average, according to Arizona Crash Facts 2015. From 2014 to 2015, the number of fatalities rose by 15 percent.

Frightening Trends of Distracted Driving

Distracted driving has become frighteningly popular, due to technological advancements of the past 15 to 20 years. Once a problem of talking on cell phones behind the wheel, some of the biggest threats to people on the roads today are issues of drivers performing a wide range of smartphone actions while driving. You cannot control the actions of someone not focusing on the road in their own car, making you vulnerable to bad decisions trending in the world of technology today.

One of the biggest threats on the roads today – beyond other drivers talking on the phone, texting or reading smartphone maps while driving – is that of people live “vlogging” behind the wheel. Live streaming of personal video has developed into a trend of doing so while driving, walking or otherwise interacting with vehicle traffic. Vloggers call these videos “IRLs,” a nickname for “In Real Life” video streaming.

In the last week of April 2018, a popular YouTube vlogger livestreamed himself as he operated his vehicle in California. This vlogger frequently conducts livestreams while driving and walking around his city streets, as many currently do. But this particular trip in his vehicle resulted in a livestream of his near-fatal crash with an 18-wheeler truck. The vlogger, called LameduckG on YouTube, is David Slavitt. The California Highway Patrol arrived on scene in Llano, California and promptly requested airlift support for emergency medical attention.

The last moments of the vlogger’s video captured the image of a red commercial truck pulling an enclosed trailer, as it was reflected in Slavitt’s mirrored sunglasses. Slavitt screamed, “Oh God!” just as viewers heard the live sounds of his collision.

Distracted Driving Causes Serious Auto Accidents and Personal Injury

Slavitt neglected to stop and yield to oncoming traffic at a highway intersection. This distracted driving nightmare happened as he was so focused on talking to his fans and reading their responses on his smartphone screen at the fateful intersection.

LameduckG’s fans were left believing the vlogger was fatally injured, for four days. On that fourth day, he was finally able to post one image of himself on social media, to alert viewers that he survived. The image shows him in his hospital bed with an arm sling and neck brace. He claims to have suffered multiple fractures, back injury and other injuries, including a broken shoulder blade.

Although the vlogger says in his posting that he wants to heal and leave the hospital soon, he does not express regret for his actions that led to the near-fatal accident. This provides one example of the type of distracted driving everyone faces on Arizona’s roads today.
